There are many factors to consider when choosing the best launch monitor for your home golf simulator. Not only will you need an affordable golf simulator that can fit your budget, but you will also want to understand the technology used to reproduce your golf shots on the big screen. Two of the more popular golf sensors are the SkyTrak+ Launch Monitor, and the Optishot swing pad. Each uses very different technology to capture your golf swing and determine the ball flight that would result from each shot.
On top of those improvements, SkyTrak+ also includes:
These precise measurements are fed into sophisticated flight algorithms which simulate a realistic shot shape, flight path and distance, accurately reflecting what your shots would do on the golf course. Photometric systems such as the SkyTrak Launch Monitor are generally accepted to provide the most accurate results possible in an indoor environment, such as in home golf simulators.
Because the SkyTrak measures the ball in flight, it can faithfully reproduce all types of shots, including knockdowns, high floaters, fades, and draws.
As the head of the golf club moves through the hitting zone, it passes through these beams and reflects the infrared light downward onto the sensors. The Optishot software is thus able to to accurately measure the lateral orientation of the clubface relative to your swing path (open/closed) as well as the speed at which the club is moving. Based on these measurements, and the club selection you provide, the Optishot software calculates the resulting ball flight.
Because the Optishot can measure in only two dimensions, X and Y, it cannot determine the loft of the club, or how high on the clubface the ball impact occurs. In fact, it is possible to swing the golf club completely over the top of the ball, without even striking it, and still get a shot registered on the Optishot. In practical terms, this means that Optishot is best for helping you learn how to hit straighter shots, since it very accurately measures whether the club is open or closed at impact, in fractions of degrees. For most beginner golfers, this is the main skill needing improvement, making the Optishot a great starting point for your home golf simulator.
The Garmin Approach R10 is a small and easy to move radar device that can track numerous metrics such as club head speed, ball speed, spin, launch angle, launch direction, smash factor and more. This device is placed 8 ft behind the tee and uses radar to detect the majority of the metrics although spin, face angle, distance, and deviation are calculated based on the measured parameters. When using the device indoors bare in mind that you will need at least 8 feet behind your tee for placement of the Approach R10.
Swing Capture feature uses your paired smartphone's camera to automatically record videos of your swings. An included phone mount can be used to mount your phone to your golf bag and record videos of your swings.
The Garmin Golf™ app allows you to view detailed statistics and shot analyses that are recorded on your Approach R10 device. For viewing on a larger display, you can mirror the Garmin Golf app to a compatible smart TV using the screen mirroring function on your smartphone. With a Garmin Golf subscription, golfers can compete with each other at over 42,000 virtual courses and participate in a weekly virtual tournament. The subscription can be purchased through the app.
Home Tee Hero, allows you to play a virtual round of golf at a course rendered with 3D technology. There are over 42,000 courses available (subscription required). Driving Range Mode, allows you to practice on a virtual driving range, and provides detailed metrics for every shot. In Weekly Tournaments you can compete in a virtual tournament against other golfers around the world on different courses each week. You can play in each weekly tournament as many times as you want. All scores are posted on the leaderboard. With TruGolf E6 Connect you can view all of your recorded shots in detailed, high-definition graphics on your E6 Connect software.
